SpaceX has successfully completed the second Falcon 9 rocket launch in 9-hours, sending the Inmarsat-6 F2 satellite into orbit from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The I-6 satellites are the first hybrid satellites that feature both L-band (ELERA) narrowband and Ka-band (Global Xpress) high-speed broadband communications payloads.
Now the 12,000-pound I-6 F2 satellite is on its way to geostationary orbit, approximately 22,200 miles above Earth. Each I-6 satellite boast 20 Ka-band spot beams that can be directed to meet customer demand second-by-second, 50% more L-band capacity than the entire 1-4 generation of ELERA satellites, 99.9% L-band capacity to ensure continuation of critical maritime / aviation safety services, and the F2 in particular will provide coverage over the Atlantic Ocean, supported by two new ground station antennas in Spain.
