In Matt Ferrell’s latest Undecided episode he explores why a recent nuclear fusion breakthrough actually matters, as until know, these experiments required more energy than they produced. The net power output is measured using a metric denoted as Q, and in this breakthrough, researchers claim they can use high-temperature superconductors to build a fully-functional fusion powerplant generating a Q above 10.
Officially called SPARC, the final proof of concept has just been completed and the next step would be to actually build the reactor. Th concept managed to achieve a magnetic field strength of 20 teslas, or the highest magnetic flux density produced yet with high-temperature superconductors at this scale. For comparison, the highest net power output achieved currently has been a Q of 0.7.
