Floating Sauna Raft

A group of friends from Joensuu, Finland, wanted something that combined the relaxation spas offer with a small boat. So, they created the Saunalutta, which is comprised of a shed sandwiched between two decks. The main structure contains a small lounging area, and of course, a sauna. The lower deck boasts a rear swim platform, and also provides a mounting point for the small outboard motor used for propulsion. The deck above offers an eating area for guests, or it can be used for other forms of entertainment. Continue reading for more.

Tigon

Your eyes aren’t playing tricks, the animal that you see above is called a “tigon”, or a hybrid cross between a male tiger and a female lion – it has parents with the same genus but of different species. They can exhibit visible characteristics from both parents: they can have both spots from the mother and stripes from the father. Any mane that a male tigon may have will appear shorter and less noticeable than a lion’s mane and is closer in type to the ruff of a male tiger. Hair Ice

Hair ice probably isn’t what you think, but something much stranger. It’s basically a type of ice that forms on dead wood and takes the shape of fine, silky hair. Meteorologist and discoverer of continental drift, Alfred Wegener, described hair ice on wet dead wood in 1918, assuming some specific fungi as the catalyst, a theory mostly confirmed by Gerhart Wagner and Christian Matzler in 2005. They can maintain their shape for hours and sometimes days. This long lifetime indicates that something is preventing the small ice crystals from recrystallizing into larger ones, since recrystallization normally occurs very quickly at temperatures near 0°C. Blue Objects Shore

These mysterious blue objects washed ashore at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, and while they look like something out of a sci-fi flick, they’re actually just Velella. In other words, jelly-like “purple sails” that are known to flood California beaches in the springtime. Fortunately, they make for some interesting photos and land wherever the breeze takes them. Earth Compared to Sun

The Sun has a mass of 2*10^30 kg, which is about 300,000 times greater than the mass of the Earth. Mass depends on the amount of matter in an object. Weight on the other hand, varies with respect to local gravity, however the Sun is not sitting near any other planet’s gravitational field. On a related note, since the radius of the moon is about 1,080 miles, approximately 64.3 million moons could fit inside the Sun if it were hollow. Continue reading for more interesting space facts.

Horsehead Nebula

The Horsehead Nebula (above) is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion, located just to the south of the star Alnitak, which is farthest east on Orion’s Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. It was first recorded in 1888 by Scottish astronomer Williamina Fleming on photographic plate B2312 taken at the Harvard College Observatory. The Horsehead Nebula is approximately 1500 light years from Earth. It is one of the most identifiable nebulae because of the shape of its swirling cloud of dark dust and gases, which bears some resemblance to a horse’s head when viewed from Earth.
