How about some strange and creepy Japanese urban legends to start off your holiday weekend? First up, we have the Okiku doll, which can be found at the Mannenji temple in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido prefecture. The doll originally had cropped hair, but over the years the hair has mysteriously grown to 25 centimeters (10 inches), despite being trimmed annually. The legend has it that a teenage boy bought the doll for his two-year-old sister, Okiku. She played with it every day until her tragic and sudden death. Her family refused to get rid of the doll and noticed that its hair was growing, so they concluded that the spirit of their daughter resided within the doll. All of the images you are about to see have won an award in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2014 contest. The photo above was captured by Mark Hanson, and shows NGC 6888, also known as the Crescent Nebula. This cosmic bubble about 25 light-years across shows emission from sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in the wind-blown nebula in red, green and blue hues. Its central star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136) and is burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Animal chimeras are produced by the merger of multiple fertilized eggs. Normally, chimerism is not visible on casual inspection; however, it has been detected in the course of proving parentage. Another way that chimerism can occur in animals is by organ transplantation, giving one individual tissues that developed from two different genomes.
