Forget solar panels, researchers from Exeter University have invented glass building blocks embedded with small solar cells. This means they not only generate their own energy, but also provide thermal insulation, while allowing natural light to enter buildings. Called “Solar Squared,” the solar cells are embedded during the manufacturing process with an array of optical elements. Continue reading for another picture and more information.

“The modular design is completely scalable, and allows for seamless architectural integration. The streamlined nature of the technology enables it to be embedded in conventional construction materials, meaning that its applications are myriad,” according to a press release.
