Virgin Galactic’s Unity 25 mission successfully launched from Spaceport America in New Mexico with six employees onboard for the short journey to the edge of space. VMS Eve, the carrier aircraft, launched at 11:15 a.m. ET, transporting the company’s VSS Unity spacecraft up to an altitude of about 44,500 feet.
Once released, VSS Unity fired up its engine and climbed past 262,000 feet at speeds of up to Mach 2.94 (2256 mph), ultimately reaching 286,176 feet. What’s next? Virgin Galactic is now completing post-flight inspections and analysis ahead of their commercial spaceline operations. That’s right, ‘Galactic 01’ will be a dedicated research mission set to take off in late June.
