Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. announced today that the VSS Unity successfully reached space, completing the company’s fourth rocket-powered and their first fully crewed spaceflight, including founder Sir Richard Branson. This enabled the company to evaluate cabin a/ customer experience, including evaluating the commercial customer cabin, the views of Earth from the edge of space, and the effectiveness of the five-day pre-flight training program at Spaceport America.
VSS Unity managed to achieve a maximum speed of Mach 3 after being released from its mothership, VMS Eve, before reaching space at an altitude of 53.5 miles. It then glided smoothly to a runway landing at Spaceport America. Other members of the crew included Beth Moses (Chief Astronaut Instructor), Colin Bennett (Lead Flight Operations Engineer), and Sirisha Bandla (Vice President of Government Affairs and Research Operations).
