A volcano in Iceland that has been dormant since the 1820s erupted tonight at approximate 1930EDT. It is located “beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, the fifth largest glacier in Iceland, [and] is covered by an ice cap.”

A state of emergency has been declared in communities near the 100 square mile (160 kilometers) glacier.
