World's Smallest Laptop Stand
Laptop stands usually arrive as thick aluminum frames or plastic ramps that claim portability while still demanding a dedicated sleeve in a bag. Less by Design treated that bulk as unnecessary once the basic job of lifting the rear edge became clear. Existing options like the Roost deliver solid height through aluminum and rubber pads yet weigh several ounces and stretch nearly ten inches long. Thin adhesive risers stay light but barely clear the desk surface. Both approaches left room for something that could disappear into a pocket yet still hold a laptop at a useful angle.

Work on this design began by looking closely at various 3D-printed prototypes and simple tile supports used in the game Rummikub. Those modest trials pointed to a wedge comprised of two triangular pieces that fit together in a slot, which is where the concept began to take shape. A laptop would rest against the slope of the wedge, and its own weight would force the components together, causing the twist required to pull the laptop up. Two small magnets, each about 5 by 2 millimeters in size, are secured in place with superglue to prevent the components from coming apart or sliding apart at all.

The actual build is rather simple, with the stand measuring approximately 11 centimeters by 5 centimeters by 2 centimeters and weighing 11 grams when created with ordinary plastic filament. Installing it is a no-brainer. Simply insert it under the back edge of a laptop with a large hole, such as a Lenovo Yoga, as the hinge is designed to allow the screen to rise without causing the base to lean forward. On an airplane tray table the footprint stays small enough to leave space for a drink or notebook. High wind or a fully raised screen can tip the combination because the open lid acts like a sail, but dropping the screen a few degrees lowers the center of gravity and restores balance.

The files for the design are completely free and are now available on Printables under the title World’s Smallest Laptop Stand, and the author is also offering to send off finished copies for a modest price. This thing can be built in a single quick session on a 3D printer, with no printouts or supports required, and the magnets are readily available from online sources. The finished piece works great with a little keyboard and mouse, and it weighs less than a pound. In actuality, it’s a terrific option for converting a laptop into a compact desktop on a train, a café table, or a hotel desk without having to bring around all the usual heaviness that keeps most stands at home.
