Navy Indoor Ocean

At first, this may look like a water theme park or movie set, but it’s actually a 12-million-gallon, football-field-size pool at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. Featuring 216 electronically-controlled wave boards, scaled-down fiberglass models, complete with canoe-sized cruisers riding waves that max out at a few feet high. When the hinged wave boards, each with its own motor, are synced up to software, they can precisely recreate eight different ocean conditions – from flat calm to typhoon-like – across all seven seas. The Navy mainly uses this pool to test models of their billion-dollar ships, making sure they will float, before building them, as well as assessing whether sailors can launch missiles and land helicopters in particular circumstances.
