Who knew they made a Windows NT-powered robotic parking garage? Find that and more in this strange list. Which ones are your favorites?
Windows NT-Powered Robotic Parking Garage
One of the first robotic parking garages to hit North America has opened in Hoboken, New Jersey. Basically, "customers drive their car onto a pallet and exit and the robotic system files their car away in its huge filing system."
The Garage even utilizes AI and tries to learn customer trends. The garage shuffles the cars around during the day to try to return the cars as quickly and efficiently as possible. The whole system runs on an off-the-shelf PC running GE's simplicity software. Anyone care to guess which operating system they're using for their off-the-shelf PC? *Cough* NT *cough*...

"Every day, tens of millions of Americans spend five minutes filling their tanks. If we can make those five minutes their most productive of the day, we not only add significant value to the consumer experience, we also help fuel retailers maximize the return on their technological investment. That retail focus is already beginning to shape a new vision of what fueling can -- and should -- be."
Finally, an old boombox has been put to good use. Gutterslide's "Touchscreen Boombox PC" combines a Hitachi TRK-8200HR and Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 Color Tablet PC into the sleek retro package you see above. Powered by Windows 98, this PC features a 20GB hard drive, 802.11b Wi-Fi, internal webcam, 4 USB ports, and a "custom desktop to keep original aesthetics"

A Windows powered casket.
How would the deceased in his eternal abode control it ?
With mice ?
What about a Vista upgrade ?
What a view of the screen.
Can you see the sunset on the lake ?
You can only take so much property with you when you move on to a different abode .

The robotic parking garage was holding people's cars as hostages last year. There was some sort of contract dispute between the city of Hoboken, which owned the garage, and the company who installed/maintained the robot/software. Basically, the city stopped paying the contract company, who locked up the software and walked away.
People couldn't retrieve their cars from the garage at all, which was completely automated.

Why not a Windows powered casket? Imagine you get buried alive...you wake up to the Windows startup sound, maybe a background that says (in large friendly letters) "Don't Panic."
After having a brief laugh you send an "I'm alive!" e-mail to the crappy mortician, another one to your lawyer, and play Solitare until someone digs you out.
Of course after five minutes of Solitare you are presented with the small unfriendly text of a Blue Screen of Death which you have no way of fixing...WELCOME TO HELL!

Rebecca in Hoboken
I live a block from the parking garage. Two cars fell off their spots while being parked and were damaged along with the cars underneath them. As someone noted above, people were unable to retrieve their cars at one point during a contract dispute. People were also unable to park or get their cars at other times when their were problems. (I believe software glitches onces or twice, but there have been other problems closing the garage as well.) And this lot costs three or four times the rate of other lots around town with the price rising all the time. The town fired the company who ran the garage but that company owns the only software in existence that can run the equipment.
