A group of college students have invented a strange parallel parking device that attaches to your car's rear bumper and "uses hydraulics to lift the rear end of the car -- enabling it to slide sideways into the parking spot." Video after the jump.

Indeed, San Fransisco is not big at all. More of a hamlet than a city really...

SF not big? It's the 14th biggest in the US... tiny I guess.

I used to have a remote control car that did something like that when I was younger. The only difference is it lifted it self completely off the ground and could travel sideways in ether direction.

I don't know what they're thinking but that idea has already been thought of. I don't remember when or on what type of car (can't seem to find a picture of it it's really old) but an extra wheel came down from the spare tire carrier in the back and did the exact same thing that this car did. I saw it on the history channel once, the idea never took off.

I swear my friends and I were talking about this a week ago. We heard about that Lexus that uses computers/cameras to parallel park itself and someone suggested just having a wheel come down and the car slides sideways. Lol

Since when is it hard to parallel park? Waste of time and money.

lexus, more like lex-sucks. they dont parallel park for you. all it does is turn the wheels, the driver still needs to apply the brake and gas if need be. i think this is pretty cool.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but i saw something just like this on the history channel a couple of years ago. The car that was designed had the spare tire slide out of its compartment on the back of the car and do the exact same thing. And...im pretty sure that it was invented sometime in the 1940's...(but dont quote me on that one). And the idea was ditched because at the time the machinery needed to complete a task like this was too heavy and bulky and expensive, and it never made it into produciton.
