108-Gigapixel Vermeer Girl with a Pearl Earring Largest 3D Microscope Scan
While a CT scanner can reveal fake AirPods, the Hirox HRX-01’s 108-gigapixel scan of Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ is currently the world’s largest 3D microscope scan. The Hirox team scanned the painting at 90x at a resolution of 1.3 microns per pixel.



The Hirox 90x telecentric objective lens enabled the team to collect accurate depth information as well as true colors. This new model also boasts faster image acquisition and higher camera resolution. Why not a higher magnification? Hirox was only allotted a specific amount of time with the painting at The Hague and they spent approximately 88 hours obtaining this 90x scan.

The HRX-01 has a built-in high-intensity LED light source that carries the light through a light guide up to the ring light integrated into the HR-1020E telecentric lens. 90x was a very good compromise between image quality, depth accuracy, and speed. It’s important to keep in mind that access to such a prestigious masterpiece is very rare and valuable, as the logistics around such scans are very difficult,” said Emilien Leonhardt, Hirox Europe Manager to PetaPixel.
