If you’ve always wanted a beastly 1949 Rolls-Royce Merlin Mark 724-1C aircraft engine, then look no further than this Silverstone Auction (Aug. 23-25) lot, where it’s expected to fetch around $63,000 USD. It first left the Hillingdon factory near Glasgow in 1949 and was most likely destined for the Canadair Northstar and the Argonaut.
This particular 27L engine was acquired in 2017 as a museum display item from a company called Flying Enterprise owned by a Danish millionaire. It was then rebuilt over a two year period by Flight Engineering of Leeds who specializes in these engines. The Merlin sits on a custom Brian James trailer specially adapted with a control panel to fire up and run this piece of history.

Its thought that the engine had been ‘inhibited’ after an inspection which involved being totally covered with inhibiter (grease-like fluid) preventing any corrosion which had totally preserved it for nearly 50 years. The result today is an almost factory-fresh engine albeit nearly 75 years old,” said the seller.
