Chevrolet has brought back the Bolt, a name that resonates with drivers who want affordability without sacrificing substance. As a 2027 model, it starts at $29,990 for the LT trim, and will drop to $28,995 later in the year, making it the most affordable EV in the US.
Starting at just under $30,000, including a $1,395 destination fee, it’s cheaper than the Nissan Leaf S+ at $31,485 and far below the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Chevrolet achieves this by leveraging economies of scale, using the same X76 electric drive unit across its entire EV lineup. This single motor produces 210 horsepower, up from the previous Bolt’s 201 horsepower, and gets you to 0-60 in around 6 seconds. The Bolt’s small footprint (169.6 inches long by 69.7 inches wide) makes it agile in city traffic, and the 105.3 inch wheelbase means a smooth ride.

A 65-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack gets a GM-estimated 255 miles on a full charge, up from the previous Bolt EUV’s 247 miles and rivaling more expensive competitors. The 2027 model supports 150 kW DC fast charging, a huge improvement over the old Bolt’s 55 kW, and can charge 10% to 80% in 26 minutes. For home charging, a 240V, 11.5-kW setup adds 40 miles of range per hour, and a basic 120V outlet adds 4 miles per hour. A native NACS charging port, a first for Chevrolet, means you can access the Tesla Supercharger network, making long trips less daunting.

Inside, the Bolt features an 11.3-inch infotainment screen that takes center stage on the dashboard, accompanied by an 11-inch digital driver display that’s customizable for quick glances at key info. Google’s built-in system powers the tech, with Google Maps navigation that takes into account battery range and real-time charging station data. Voice commands via “Hey Google” control everything from climate control to smart-home devices, like opening your garage door as you pull in. There are plenty of entertainment options, with apps like HBO Max, Prime Video and even Angry Birds available for streaming or gaming while parked. One caveat: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are missing, a choice that might annoy some but aligns with GM’s strategy of integrated software.

A new column shifter frees up space between the front seats and open storage areas keep essentials within reach. An optional panoramic sunroof brightens the interior and the hatchback layout. Heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and wireless phone charging add a little luxury but some features are optional. With 96.6 cubic feet of passenger volume and 56.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded the Bolt is a versatile companion for daily commutes or weekend getaways.

Over 20 standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist and intersection collision mitigation. A rear cross-traffic alert with braking and a safety alert seat add extra peace of mind. If you want more, an optional tech package adds HD surround vision and traffic sign recognition. Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driving system, is available as an upgrade and syncs with Google Maps to highlight compatible routes and guide lane changes at exits.
The X76 drive unit is designed in-house and uses minimal rare earth materials and a silicon carbide inverter to cut energy loss and boost range and reduce cost. A blended regenerative braking system recaptures energy smoothly whether you’re using one-pedal driving or not with a refined pedal feel that’s better than the previous model. The Bolt also introduces vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability to power a home during outages when paired with GM’s Energy Home System and deliver up to 9.6 kW. This is a rare feature in this price bracket and adds a layer of utility for emergency preparedness.

Outside, the Bolt receives a new design, but it retains its hatchback configuration. There are seven colors to select from, including Marina Blue and Habanero Orange, as well as three finishes for the 17-inch aluminum wheels. A new RS variant, priced around $32,000, adds sporty styling with high-gloss black wheels, roof rails, and unique Atomic Yellow paint with red interior stitching. The Bolt’s 37.7-foot turning circle and MacPherson strut front suspension make it nimble, but its torsion beam rear suspension favors simplicity over innovation.
