3D-Printed Car Rim Wheel
In the near future, you may be able to 3D print rims for your car. Proper Printing’s Jón Schone did just that, and it’s not as simple as one may think. Some of the early prototypes suffered from several issues, including layer separation since air pressure stretches the entire rim out, forming bubbles and causing instability. So, increasing thickness was the next step, and that required a 3D scan of the brake caliper to ensure that the rim wasn’t too big. Read more for the video of it in-action for additional information.

In the end, the working rim required bent threaded rods and 2.7kg of ABS filament for each half to be strong enough to road test. That’s right, their final print was strong enough to withstand an inflated tire and some driving. One caveat: this rim isn’t certified for street use so technically it’s only legal off-road or on a race track.
