Programmers Tomas Vymazal and Mikkel Gravgaard have just released a Quake 1 port for Apple Watch, but you’ll need to build the project yourself before playing. It uses the Quake SW renderer and features touch, gyro, as well as digital crown controls, while a new AVFoundation audio backend keeps the sounds as close to the original as possible.
The port itself is based on id Software’s open source release and open source ports for Mac / iOS. Put simply, it’s running in an emulated environment and pushes the Apple Watch processor to its limit, complete with real-time 3D rendering. A filter on the AVFoundation audio backend removes clicking sounds that you would hear in low-frequency samples. Unfortunately, this port is not available on the App Store over licensing issues, so you’ll have to download the source code and build a demo file in Xcode. More information here. Or, you could just play Quake on this old firewall device.
