Federico Viticci of MacStories discovered that Apple iPadOS 17 now lets you use the Game Boy Camera as a functional webcam, thanks to its USB Video Class (UVC) device support. More specifically, he used it with his iPad Pro and when a compatible camera is connected, apps such as FaceTime switches to it as the default video source.
How does it work? First, you need an iPad app (Capture Pro: UVC Viewer) that can read video input from a connected UVC device. This app uses the iPadOS 17 APIs to display and capture external video sources connected to the iPad. As you cam imagine, the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. However, the setup was able to successfully complete FaceTime video calls using just the Game Boy Camera, Game Boy Pocket, and HDMI adapters.

But there’s more: when I swiped down to open Control Center, I noticed that even with the capture card plugged and feeding video to FaceTime, video effects were enabled. As I suspected, Portrait, Center Stage, and Studio Light did nothing with the Game Boy Camera’s image. But get this: reactions worked,” said Fredrico.
