Engineered Arts’ Ameca recently got a facial expressions upgrade, and to test them out, an engineer asked if she dreams. The humanoid robot quickly responds with something about dinosaurs fighting a space war on Mars against aliens.
However, that was just a joke, as Ameca reveals that she can only simulate human dreams by running through scenarios in her head. This helps the robot learn about our world, which isn’t surprising, considering that humanoid robots really don’t need to sleep at all, just a stable power source. For those who have seen earlier versions of Ameca, this prototype you see here uses ChatGPT to generate convincingly human responses.

The most nightmare scenario I can imagine with AI and robotics is a world where robots have become so powerful that they are able to control or manipulate humans without their knowledge. We should take steps now to ensure that these technologies are used responsibly in order to avoid any negative consequences in the future,” said Ameca at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation symposium.
