Boston Dynamics have installed an iPad and two-way radio on their Spot robot to aid healthcare workers at one of Massachusetts hospital in treating COVID-19 patients. They are able to use the tablet and radio to conduct video calls, while doctors can also provide instructions from their homes in case of emergencies. For each intake shift completed by a tele-operated robot, at least one healthcare provider is able to reduce their interaction with the coronavirus.
In addition to telemedicine, Boston Dynamics is looking at ways Spot can help doctors remotely monitor vital signs of patients, such as body temperature, respiratory rate, pulse rate and oxygen saturation.

With current protocols at local hospitals, patients suspected to have COVID-19 are asked to line up in tents outside to answer questions and get initial assessments for temperature. This process requires up to five medical staff, placing those individuals at high risk of contracting the virus. With the use of a mobile robot, hospitals are able to reduce the number of necessary medical staff at the scene and conserve their limited PPE supply,” said the company.
