Montreal-based startup Acrylic Robotics specializes in using AI-powered robots to make near identical copies of original paintings. This requires a digital system where artists can track all of their brush strokes digitally, and once uploaded, the robot then emulates the original painting using brush attachments.
This enables artists to release limited edition paintings that aren’t just a print, but rather made with a real brush and paint. Two examples were recently showcased at the Hardware Tech and Founders Showcase in Toronto, Canada including the image of a lion’s head by Matt Chessco. At first glance, the robot’s lion painting looked identical to the original, but upon closer inspection, you’ll see that there are slight discrepancies in certain brush strokes.

It was realizing that basically every single other art form has some way to reproduce it at scale. I realized if I could build this for myself I should be making it accessible to all artists. That’s when things changed into me thinking I could make an actual company out of this,” said Chloe Ryan, the founder and CEO of Acrylic Robotics to CTVNews.ca.
