Amazon successfully launched 27 satellites today for its Project Kuiper, a plan to rival SpaceX’s Starlink. This event happened in Cape Canaveral, Florida, using a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, previously delayed from April 9 due to inclement weather.
These first 27 working satellites were placed in low Earth orbit (LEO) at around 280 miles altitude, with a goal to reach 392 miles. This kicks off a $10 billion effort to build a network of 3,236 satellites to provide global broadband internet. Amazon connects Kuiper to its bigger ecosystem, especially Amazon Web Services (AWS), focusing on cloud computing and business solutions like 4G/5G support for telecom companies.

It focuses on being affordable and versatile for both homes and businesses. Its user terminals are expected to cost less than $400 to produce, ranging from a tiny 7-inch, 1-pound model (100 Mbps) to larger dishes for up to 1 Gbps, designed to be cost-effective and flexible.
Project Kuiper is a strong rival to Starlink, tapping into Amazon’s resources, AWS connections, and affordable terminals to reach far-off places and businesses. But it’s behind in size, experience, and rollout speed. Starlink’s head start, reusable rockets, and large user base keep it in the lead, while Kuiper’s success relies on fixing production and launch challenges.
