Anbernic has finally revealed the full details about their next handheld console, along with the price, which has left everyone talking. The RG Rotate begins with a basic model that will cost early adopters less than $90, but only while supplies last within the first few hours. This startlingly inexpensive entry price is matched by a design intelligently centered around a simple mechanical twist, literally, that transforms the way this thing feels in your palm.
When you slide and rotate the square screen 90 degrees, a full set of controls appear underneath. The action is silky smooth thanks to a tiny metal hinge that has been tested for years to ensure it does not loosen with regular use. When you close everything up, the machine shrinks down to fit easily into your pocket and functions as a basic music player via Bluetooth headphones, which is a nice little addition. When you open it, the layout changes to match the game you’re playing, whether it’s a vertical shooter or a classic side-scroller that requires more space.

The RG Rotate features a 3.5-inch IPS display with a beautiful 720×720 resolution and a precise 1:1 shape. Games from previous systems line up well, with no need for scaling or black bars on the sides. A Unisoc Tiger T618 CPU provides power, which is backed up by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Android 12 is the pre-loaded operating system, so you can easily install emulators directly from Google Play or sideload your own favorites. Performance-wise, you can play a PlayStation One game, a Nintendo 64 game, or even a GameCube or PS2 game without issues. It also handles the occasional Wii game for good measure; WiFi 5 allows you to stream games from your home PC, and Bluetooth 5 communicates with additional controllers when the machine is placed on a table.

Build options are provided from the start. The lighter Rygge features a metal front and a plastic back. The Aurora Silver model is a whole different beast; it has a solid metal body with a premium feel that is nevertheless comfortable enough for long play sessions. These shoulder buttons are available in both high and low profiles, allowing you to tailor them to fit your grip. A 2000mAh battery provides ample power for commutes and lunch breaks, and the single USB-C connector charges swiftly at 10W. Oddly, there is no headphone jack, but it is understandable given that most users now use wireless headphones.

Pre-orders begin on May 11th at 6pm in Beijing time, which coincides with morning hours on the US East coast, and the units will begin shipping soon after, which, given Anbernic’s usual quick turnaround on new releases, means you need to be quick off the mark if you want one, especially once the early-bird window closes. These things tend to fly off the shelves pretty quickly at $87.99 (plastic) and $107.99 (metal), so don’t expect those prices to last long.
