You’ve seen the glass MacBook, now check out a new Apple patent that possibly points to a MacBook keyboard with special multi-function aluminum keys. Unlike traditional keycaps that wear out over time, these aluminum keys would have laser cut perforations that allow a backlight to shine through the various symbols or letters.
Other sketches discovered in this patent seem to show an array of micro-OLED or OLED pixels beneath the keys that would allow for further customization. As for aesthetics, the aluminum used would most likely match that of the MacBook chassis itself, giving it a more unified and sleeker look. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when we’ll see this keyboard implemented on a future Apple device.

Apple’s patent FIG. 3B above shows a view a key with an array of perforations through the top surface #300 simplified and visibly enlarged for the purposes of explanation in the present disclosure. In other words, the keycap would appear to have a blank uniform appearance to an unaided human eye,” according to Patently Apple.
