Could an Apple Watch with color-changing bands possibly be in the works? The answer would be yes, or at least according to a recently approved patent filing. These bands would make use of electrochromic technology that would enable users to change the color in three separate zones, controlled directly from the Apple Watch itself.

Whether it be to match an outfit or just a mood, the color scheme options are near unlimited, all without having to swap out bands. So far, there’s just one caveat: it appears as if all of these color-changing bands are made from some type of fabric, which means you may not want to wear them when exercising, in bad weather, etc. Technically speaking, there are several layers in the fabric, including the conductor, polymer, and electrochromatic.

Apple further notes that the watch band conductor can optionally include a shape memory alloy that changes shape when a voltage is applied to the conductor,” according to Patently Apple.
