Arkansas vehicles traveling through highway construction zones will soon face an entirely new level of scrutiny, and it has arrived a little earlier than intended. Work zone cameras that are now catching speeders will begin checking to see if someone is distracted while driving by a cell phone or other handheld gadget in mid-January 2026.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation and Arkansas Highway Police announced in early January that these interstate cameras will be getting a software upgrade. They’re the same cameras that have been mounted at work zone entrances, informing vehicles that enforcement is still active. The deal is simple: fewer distractions equals fewer crashes and significantly less danger to workers and travelers on the go. Arkansas regrettably sees a regular stream of work zone events each year, and officials are hopeful that this change will reduce that number even more.

So, how does it all work? Acusensus, an Australian company, developed this technology after establishing similar operations in the United Kingdom, Greece, and Australia. The camera captures a photo of each vehicle as it passes, and the software detects any drivers who appear to be holding a handheld device. It indicates potential issues, reducing the number of photographs from thousands to a far more manageable handful.
A regular cop then investigates each of the highlighted photographs. If it’s obvious what’s going on, they’ll alert a colleague further down the line. The second officer waits until the automobile has exited the work zone before safely pulling it over. At each stage, a human must make a decision. No ticket appears in the mail, and no fine is automatically imposed.
When it comes to data handling, everything is done in strict accordance with the rules, as photographs are erased the same day or the next if they do not require a warning or a fee. Officials are quick to point out that the state doesn’t keep track of all the times people haven’t done anything illegal.
Arkansas Highway Police Chief Jeff Holmes highlighted the practical reality of this change: hands-free laws for work zones have been in existence for some time, but proving you disobeyed the restrictions has always been difficult without solid proof in hand. Officers couldn’t manage to catch folks in the act frequently enough – until now.
