Backyard Scientist Laser Chainsaw 100 Dollar Bill
Lasers can be used to reveal a toilet’s spray, and also, to remove ink from currency. More specifically, Kevin Kohler of Backyard Scientist fame decided to test a laser chainsaw / welding machine with various attachments to see if it was able to successfully complete random tasks, including removing cobwebs, cutting down a tree, and even removing ink from currency.

How does laser cleaning work? It basically sends nanosecond-length pulses of laser light towards a surface. When it interacts with contaminants, they turn to either gas or just ejected from the surface after absorbing the laser light. Technically speaking, it’s called laser ablation, and this occurs when a material layer or coating is removed with a laser beam, most commonly rust. Since everything has different properties and molecular bonds, the energy transferred by the laser beam must be above the ablation threshold of that particular material.
