Watch out SpaceX, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) rocket successfully completed a vertical landing test at sea in in Haiyang, East China’s Shandong Province. The prototype managed to fly at an altitude of over 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) before descending into a smooth hover. It then decelerated using engine reverse thrust and touched down steadily with a landing precision of under 10 meters (33 feet).
The rocket measures 2.1 meters (6.9 feet) long and 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) wide, while weighing in at 93 kilograms (205 pounds) on the launchpad. Power comes from twin engines, each with a thrust of 550 newtons, and a turbojet engine was used during the test to simulate a variable thrust liquid rocket. The latter is an engine that would be used during a vertical landing at sea or on land.

Ours is based on the domestic technology, both software and hardware, and we are exploring technology thresholds such as the variable thrust management, precision positioning and the stabilizing technology on our own,” said Lian Jie, CAS Senior Engineer to GlobalTimes.
