Chipotle’s new Autocado and Augmented Makeline robots make their public debut this week at two locations in Southern California – Huntington Beach (20972 Magnolia St) and Corono del Mar (3050 East Coast Hwy). The former cuts, cores, and peels avocados before they are hand mashed to create the restaurant’s popular guacamole add-on.
Augmented Makeline is essentially a robotic makeline that was built in collaboration with Hyphen, and they begin the burrito bowl / salad process on a conveyor belt-like line before it rises up to the main assembling area for a human worker to finish the process. This frees up employees to make burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and kid’s meals, thus reducing wait times.

These robotic devices could help us build a stronger operational engine that delivers a great experience for our team members and our guests while maintaining Chipotle’s high culinary standards. Optimizing our use of these systems and incorporating crew and customer feedback are the next steps in the stage-gate process before determining their broader pilot plans,” said Curt Garner, Chief Customer and Technology Officer.
