There’s Torso 2, and then Clone Robotics’ Protoclone, the company’s first musculoskeletal android. Put simply, this humanoid robot was designed to mimic human anatomy with a focus on biomimicry, aiming for hyper-realistic movement and structure.
This musculoskeletal android boasts a polymer skeleton mimicking all 206 human bones (with some fusions). It uses over 1,000 “Myofiber” artificial muscles—fluid-driven actuators that replicate human muscle contraction—offering over 200 degrees of freedom for fluid, human-like motion. Protoclone also has more than 500 sensors, including depth cameras, inertial sensors, and pressure sensors, for environmental awareness as well as feedback.

V1 features no face, just a black visor, so it doesn’t look creepy and focuses on doing its job. It currently uses pneumatics but plans to switch to quieter hydraulics. A unique feature is its water-based cooling system, akin to “sweating,” to manage heat from its muscles. It’s designed for household tasks like laundry, dishwashing, simple cooking, and vacuuming, with ambitions for long-term independent operation in complex settings. However, it’s still a prototype, shown suspended in demos, indicating it can’t yet walk or balance unassisted.
