DARPA has just unveiled Atlas, which is touted as the world’s most advanced humanoid robot. It features an integrated real-time control computer, a hydraulic pump w/thermal management, 28 hydraulically actuated joints, Carnegie Robotics sensor head with LIDAR and stereo vision, and hands built by iRobot, along with Sandia National Labs. Not only does it keep its balance and remain standing after being hit by a 20-pound wrecking ball, ATLAS also tackles a treadmill with ease, staying on two feet while two-by-fours and other obstacles are tossed in its path.
