Donkey Kong 64 DK64 Recompiled Native PC Port
Developers with deep experience on Donkey Kong 64 have turned the 1999 Nintendo 64 classic into a version that runs directly on modern computers. The project, called DK64: Recompiled, produces a native build for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It removes many of the original hardware limits while keeping the core adventure intact.



The original game had you racing through enormous levels as Donkey Kong and his friends. You were continuously gathering golden bananas and switching between Kongs to move around, solve riddles, and discover new regions to explore. It was a lot of fun on the N64, but it had limitations due to its age. During those busy scenes, frame rates might occasionally suffer. The camera and certain mini-games felt clunky because they were limited by the older technology. Constantly moving between characters required returning to those DK barrels, which might seriously disrupt the flow of a long gathering run.

The new port freshens up the classic experience. Instead of running the game through an emulator in real time, which can be hit-or-miss, the team ported the original code to C. The C code is then built into a program that the PC processor can directly execute. This makes the entire process more efficient and allows for some current changes and upgrades without affecting the main game.

Performance is one of the first things you will notice. Frame rates exceed the original boundaries, so even when a large number of characters, enemies, or effects are on screen, the action remains silky smooth. The input latency is as low as you want it. Mini-games now reply quite quickly. If you recall experiencing slowdowns or sluggish times in the N64 version, you’ll be astounded at the change.

When it comes to display, things are also upgraded. The port supports widescreen resolutions, and the cutscenes have been modified to match current displays flawlessly. And if you have the necessary equipment, you can even set it to 4K to see the worlds and characters in stunning detail on a large screen or high-density monitor. The game no longer feels cramped or letterboxed.

Mod support also improves gameplay in practical ways, like the “Tag Anywhere” functionality, for example. This allows you to move between DK, Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky without having to return to the DK barrel each time. That significantly improves the flow of exploration and banana collection, and the team intends to add many more quality-of-life elements. They’ve also set their sights on full support for the DK64 Randomizer, a completely new method to play with the same stages and objectives.

The entire thing is built on top of the public N64: Recompiled framework. That is the toolset that converts N64 binaries into C code that can be used anywhere, and it has already been utilized in other old games. Rainchus is leading the development of this port with a team that includes Ballaam, Killklli, and Umed, the same modders who created the extremely popular DK64 Randomizer.

However, in order to transfer the game assets, you will need a copy of the original Donkey Kong 64 ROM. The recompiled build is clean because it contains no copyrighted content. After you’ve installed the ROM, the native executable will handle everything else. When the pre-built versions are complete, they should be available on the project’s GitHub page. You will not have to worry with emulators, either. They suggest that it will be published in the summer of 2026, or the next few months.
