Doomsday Vault Svalbard Hottest Temperature
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, nicknamed the Doomsday Vault, is essentially a secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago. It’s managed by the Norwegian government, the Crop Trust, and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen). Recently, the area has been experiencing a heat wave, which saw peak temperatures of 71.7° F (averages 48°F in July) in Longyearbyen, a small town on the northern Norwegian island of Svalbard, setting a new record. Read more for two videos and additional information.

Inside, the vault seed samples are copies of samples stored in the depositing genebanks. Think of it like a safe deposit box in a bank, but in this case, the Government of Norway owns the facility and the depositing genebanks own the seeds they send. While nobody has access to anyone else’s seeds from the seed vault, the database of samples as well s depositors is maintained by NordGen. Seeds are sealed off in three-ply foil packages and then placed into plastic tote containers on metal shelving racks.
