ESA MTG-I1 Satellite Earth Images
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) MTG-I1 weather satellite captured an incredible image of Earth using its Flexible Combined Imager. It depicts much of Northern and Western Europe and Scandinavia covered in clouds, while relatively clear skies appear over Italy as well as the Western Balkans.

MTG-I1, also known as the Meteosat Third Generation Imager, is a third-generation weather satellite equipped with cameras capable of producing imagery in much higher resolutions and more frequently. Whether it be cloud vortices over the Canary Islands, the snow-covered Alps or sediment in the water along the coast of Italy, these details are now visible in images.

This image is a great example of what European cooperation in space can achieve. The level of detail MTG-I1’s image reveals, unachievable over Europe and Africa from a geostationary orbit until now, will give us a greater understanding of our planet and the weather systems that shape it. This image represents not just what can be achieved through European expertise but our determination to ensure the benefits of new technology are felt by communities in Europe and beyond,” said Simonetta Cheli, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programs.
