KWK Promes’ Safe House looks normal at first, but it can be quickly transformed into a concrete fortress. Should there ever be a zombie apocalypse, the solid barrier can be converted into a holding pen for guests before they can enter. That’s not all, every windows is clad in movable shutters, while the south wall has a roll-down gate that doubles as a projection screen.
According to the architects, the clients’ top priority was to gain the feeling of maximum security in their future house, which determined the building’s outlook and performance. The structure then took the form of a cuboid in which parts of the exterior walls are movable. When the house opens up to the garden, both eastern as well as western side walls move towards the exterior fence creating a courtyard.
