Infinity Train Charge Gravity
Engineers from Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) and Fortescue Metals Group are currently developing the world’s first infinity train. This regenerating battery electric iron ore train project does not need any fuel, but instead uses gravitational energy to fully recharge its battery electric systems without requiring additional charging systems for the return trip to reload. It will help Fortescue reach net zero emissions by 2030, while lowering operating costs.

There are no specific details regarding the technology, but apparently, this train will run on a downhill slope that offers plenty of braking opportunities in the loaded direction to charge up the battery in regenerative fashion. Since the train becomes so light after unloading, the battery has enough power to return to the mine and start the journey again without requiring any additional charging equipment.

The Infinity Train has the capacity to be the world’s most efficient battery electric locomotive. The regeneration of electricity on the downhill loaded sections will remove the need for the installation of renewable energy generation and recharging infrastructure, making it a capital efficient solution for eliminating diesel and emissions from our rail operations,” said Elizabeth Gaines, Fortescue Chief Executive Officer.
