Jason Allemann has always been a LEGO fanatic, but now after years of building, he’s created something truly unique, a fully-functional mosaic printer. Think of it as a cross between a 3D printer, a traditional inkjet printer, and scanner, but built entirely with a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 set. Simply put, the machine can scan an image, and then recreate a mosaic of it. Continue reading for four more videos and additional information.
The machine itself uses an EV3 color sensor to first scan the source image before saveing the data to the Mindstorms unit, which then prints multiple copies of the image directly from the image data. Printing plates used operate on a gravity-feed system, in which the printer’s head is a 1 x 1 round plate capable of picking up and placing other plates within the printer – can hold up to 450 plates in up to nine colors.
