Beginning yesterday afternoon, Guatemala’s Pacaya volcano erupted with a fury of lava and rocks. Houses crumbled and “an ash plume 3,000 feet (1,000) meters high that trailed more than 12 miles (20 kilometers) to the northwest.” Video after the break.

At least 1,600 people from villages near to the volcano were evacuated – with officials saying 600 had been housed in temporary shelters.
