Hacksmith Real Spider-Mech Robot
A strontium plasma lightsaber was the last big project for the Hacksmith team, and now they’re back with a real-life spider mech robot that you can actually drive around. It all started with building the hexagonal frame, which required chopping up mass manufactured alignment arms typically used for automobiles. After welding the arms and attaching the legs, they discovered that they all worked perfectly, other than the need for computerized controls.

The eight excavator buckets were then replaced with hex pods for more stability. A computerized control system was then built using a Linux computer, servo controllers, a custom PCB, and then a PlayStation controller. To get the controls actually working, custom software needed to be programmed before the spider-mech’s design could be finalized in SolidWorks. Let’s just say that after much trial and error, everything somewhat worked as they had planned.
