Halo Spartan Survivors Game Microsoft Approval
A tiny crew of Halo diehards has done something that feels like a small miracle: they’ve built a game that nails the soul of the franchise and won Microsoft’s rare stamp of approval. Halo Spartan Survivors, a roguelite bullet-hell romp, mixes the wild chaos of Vampire Survivors with the gritty heart of Halo’s world. It’s out now, free to play on itch.io, with Steam, Xbox, and mobile versions coming later in 2025.

Just two developers—Juan Guillot Gonzalez and Gaetan Dezeiraud, working as Bathrobe & Dezeiraud Games—set out to craft a love letter to Halo, never dreaming it’d get the green light. In Spartan Survivors, you step into Master Chief or The Arbiter’s boots, blasting through waves of Covenant and Flood with Halo’s classic arsenal.

Getting Microsoft’s blessing was no small win. Fan projects often get slapped with cease-and-desist letters—Nintendo’s notorious for shutting down tributes without a second thought. But Halo Studios and Microsoft took a different road. They didn’t just let Spartan Survivors slide; they cheered it on, asking only for a small tweak to the game’s legal disclaimer to clarify it’s a fan-made project, not an official Halo title. “It’s a nod to the community’s passion,” the developers shared, still a bit stunned by the support.

On itch.io, Spartan Survivors is already turning heads. It’s simple but gripping: fend off endless enemies, upgrade your weapons and skills, all wrapped in Halo’s unmistakable look and feel. More goodies are coming soon—a late June 2025 update will add new drops, boss fights, a fresh weapon, slicker UI, and custom cursors for each gun. After that, the team’s polishing it for a Steam launch in July, with mobile and Xbox versions hitting later in the summer. “We’re blown away by your dedication,” Halo Studios told the devs, and you can feel that enthusiasm in every pixel.

Microsoft’s choice to back this project could shake things up. By discretely working with the devs to fit their Game Content Usage Rules, they’ve shown that fan creations and big franchises can play nice.
