Digital billboards are normally used by companies to promote things, but Brian Kane rented one for more artistic reasons, the “Healing Tool” to be exact. This installation involved rotating between pictures of surrounding natural environments, creating optical illusions that blend in with the environment. The scenes change depending on the time of day, with natural images appearing during the daytime, while space photographs dominate the night. “By removing the marketing message from the advertising space, we create an unexpected moment of introspection. People are allowed to interpret an image based on their own experience, and not necessarily with the singular focus of the advertiser’s intent,” said Kane.
