Hertz x UVEye AI Detection System Vehicle Rentals
Thanks to the Hertz x UVeye AI detection system, ensuring that vehicles are well maintained before, during, and after rentals, is now a breeze, especially at airports. It’s often called an “MRI for vehicles,” as it uses artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning to detect mechanical and cosmetic issues with 96% accuracy.

The setup includes three key pieces. Helios, the first, scans under the car to spot frame damage, missing parts, leaks, or issues with brakes and exhaust. Artemis, the second, is built to inspect tires, looking at tread depth, sidewall scratches, air pressure, and alignment problems. Finally, Atlas/Atlas Lite is a 360-degree scanner that spots scratches, dents, glass chips, and paint problems on the outside.

This drive-through system checks a car in 3-4 seconds as it goes up to 30 mph, using high-resolution cameras (taking up to 200 frames a second) and sensors. It avoids slow manual inspections, speeding up pick-up and drop-off a ton. AI algorithms analyze the images right away, spotting issues like scratches, dents, worn tires, fluid leaks, or damage under the car. It even distinguishes between surface rust and severe corrosion or checks tire date codes.

When customers return, they get a full report on their phone, showing any issues with pictures and info. The system reportedly compares pre- and post-rental scans to determine if damage occurred during your rental period, thus hopefully reducing disputes.

Hertz is setting up over 100 UVeye systems at big U.S. airports, starting with Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, to keep track of its huge fleet of over 500,000 vehicles worldwide. The system’s cloud-based storage keeps a steady record of each car’s condition over time.

With millions of customers and over 100 years of service around the world, we’re continually focused on transforming every aspect of our company and that includes how we maintain our vehicles. We are excited to partner with UVeye to bring efficiency and greater accuracy to our maintenance process, so we can focus on our vehicles being ready when and where our customers want them,” said Mike Moore, EVP Technical Operations at Hertz.
