There’s no denying that this homemade Boeing 737 simulator is an impressive feat, but it just doesn’t recreate the passenger experience like Alex Shakespeare’s latest creation. Called ‘The Alternative Flight Simulator’, it lets you practice sitting in an airplane for hours at a time, taking in the views of the skies and landscape below, complete with a tray table.
This wasn’t a simple job, as Alex had to source many parts from retired planes, such as the three seats you see in Alex Air, along with fluorescent lighting, a window that houses a monitor, and even a functional overhead panel. The footage you see is also from real flights that can be selected via a control panel powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero board, which also lets you control the lights, fans and flight attendant call button.
