Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy Edition was previewed at the company’s Harmony Ecology Conference yesterday, and it leaves Android behind for good. This operating system was designed from the ground up and is capable of adapting to multiple devices, without needing separate versions.

One major difference you’ll notice is that the AppGallery promotes HarmonyOS native app development and will not support any Android apps. Why? Developers will only be able to upload apps using the ‘HAP’ installation package rather than the Android Package (APK) and many companies are working on porting their existing software to the new AppGallery. The base operating system includes the Pangu AI model, MindSpore AI Framework, DevEco Studio/DevEco Testing integrated development environment, as well as the ArkUI/ArkUI-X programming framework. A beta version of HarmonyOS NEXT Galaxy Edition will be seeded to developers in Q2 2024.
