Astronomers used Hubble Space Telescope data to visualize what starburst galaxy NGC 1569, located 10.96 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Camelopardalis, could sound like. This star factory creates them at a rate 100 times faster than in our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
In this sonification, the brighter lights represent higher pitched and louder tones, while the three color channels used to process this image are each given their own pitch range. That’s right, the red represents lower pitches, green in medium pitches, and blue serves as high pitches. One thing you probably don’t realize about NGC 1569 is the fact that its entire core is 5,000 light-years wide. Its centerpiece is actually a grouping of three giant star clusters, each containing more than a million stars.
