Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 N is here and it’s gunning for the Tesla Model 3 Performance and BMW M3. With a dual-motor setup producing 641 horsepower in its peak mode, 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and a whole load of tech that makes it just as fun on a track as it is on a daily commute.
Hyundai’s N division doesn’t mess around and the IONIQ 6 N is proof. Built on the same Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) as the IONIQ 5 N, this sedan pumps out 601 horsepower in standard mode and 10-second N Grin Boost takes it to 641 horsepower (478 kW). The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system – 223 hp (166 kW) at the front and 378 hp (282 kW) at the rear – gets the car from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds with some sources reporting 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds.

Top speed? 160-161 mph (257 km/h) depending on who you ask. “IONIQ 6 N integrates cutting-edge technologies and capabilities derived from Hyundai N’s motorsport programs,” says Joonwoo Park, Vice President of Hyundai’s N Brand Management Group. The 84-kWh battery gives you a range of around 291 miles, so performance and practicality are balanced.

Hyundai’s N philosophy – Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, Everyday Sportscar – is all over the IONIQ 6 N. The car has an advanced suspension system tuned for precision with electronically controlled dampers that adapt to road conditions and driver input. Wider tires and a lower stance give you more grip and the aerodynamic body with a ducktail spoiler and aggressive air intakes keeps you stable at high speeds. The electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD) optimizes torque distribution so cornering is a joy. “This is a car that’s designed to give you confidence and excitement whether you’re carving through a twisty backroad or commuting to work,” Park says.

Electric cars lack the visceral feedback of their petrol counterparts but Hyundai’s engineers have addressed this. The IONIQ 6 N introduces an upgraded N e-Shift, a simulated eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that mimics gear changes for a more engaging drive. Paired with this is the N Active Sound system with three modes: Ignition (motorsport-inspired), Evolution (futuristic) and Supersonic (jet-like). These synthetic sounds are piped through the car’s speakers and add an emotional layer to the experience. “We wanted to create a connection between driver and machine,” says a Hyundai spokesperson, “combining the efficiency of an EV with the thrill of a performance car.”

Priced at around £65,000 (roughly $83,000) the IONIQ 6 N takes on the Tesla Model 3 Performance and BMW M3. Its 641 horsepower in N Grin Boost mode beats the Tesla’s 510 horsepower and matches the M3’s output and its 3.1-second 0-60 mph time is competitive with both.
