James Webb Space Telescope Herbig-Haro 46/47 Young Stars
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captured a stunning image of Herbig-Haro 46/47 objects, a pair of actively forming young stars, in high-resolution near-infrared light. They can be observed at the center of the pink and red diffraction spikes, within the orange-white splotch and buried deep inside a disk of gas as well as that feeds their growth.

You cannot see its disk, but the shadow can be viewed in the two dark, conical regions encapsulating the central stars. Two-sided lobs flank the actively forming central stars in a fiery orange, while its more recent ejections appear bluish. The latter runs just beneath the red horizontal diffraction spike and the ejections make clearer wavy patters on the right side.

Take another long look at this image. Although it appears Webb has snapped Herbig-Haro 46/47 edge-on, one side is angled slightly closer to Earth. Counterintuitively, it’s the smaller right half. Though the left side is larger and brighter, it is pointing away from us. Over millions of years, the stars in Herbig-Haro 46/47 will fully form – clearing the scene of these fantastic, multihued ejections, allowing the binary stars to take center stage against a galaxy-filled background,” said Isabelle Yan, NASA Social Media Specialist.
