A countertop gadget that pulls drinking water from kitchen humidity and whips up a coffee with it might sound like something from The Jetsons. Yet, Kara Water’s Kara Pod, revealed at CES 2025, manages to pulls if off. This two-in-one marvel, serving as both a water dispenser and a pod coffee maker, aims to shake up convenience and eco-friendliness in a stylish bundle.

Kara Pod’s standout feature is its AirDrive tech, inspired by the Namib Desert’s Stenocara beetle, which thrives by snagging water from the air. With a zeolite desiccant system, it draws up to 3.2 liters of water each day—roughly a gallon or 13 cups. This water goes through a strict three-step purification: heat to knock out microbes, UV rays to zap bacteria and viruses, and carbon filtering to scrub away chlorine, odors, and PFAS chemicals. The outcome is mineral-boosted, alkaline water with a pH over 9.2+, which Kara says promotes hydration and well-being. “Kara Pod turns air into 3.2 liters of clean, tasty water daily, loaded with minerals that support bone strength, clearer skin, and an alkaline vibe,” says Cody Soodeen, Kara Water’s CEO and founder.

Wi-Fi handles updates wirelessly, so you won’t need to mess with downloading anything onto your gadgets. Plus, you can pick a shade—black, white, or beige—to match your kitchen style.

Eco-consciousness drives Kara Pod’s design. By making water on the spot, it skips bottled water, slashing plastic waste and delivery truck emissions. Kara figures it could save users up to $1,464 a year on bottles and coffee runs. The compostable pods break down naturally in your compost heap, cutting environmental strain. “With this beverage breakthrough, Kara Water rolled out the cheapest Air-To-Water dispenser yet, making water and coffee a breeze for everyone,” the company shared in its CES 2025 reveal.

The tech isn’t totally fresh—Kara’s earlier Kara Pure, a standalone water cooler, snagged the 2023 CES Best Innovation Award for similar air-to-water magic. But squeezing it into a countertop coffee maker is a daring move. Soodeen’s idea sparked from his Pennsylvania childhood, where tainted well water pushed his family to bottled sources. “I wanted to craft a smart way to get clean drinking water,” he told Smithsonian Magazine, pointing to the Namibian beetle as his muse. Priced at $459, the Kara Pod offers an affordable dip into air-to-water tech, a steal compared to the $4,899 Kara Pure.

The Kara Pod performs solidly. It can brew up to 18 cups of coffee daily, with its 0.85-gallon tank refilled by the air-to-water system. A glowing LED shows the tank level, and the alkaline water, enhanced with calcium, magnesium, and sodium, is perfect for drinking or coffee.
