Parrot Steals GoPro New Zealand Hiking Family
New Zealand’s Fiordlands is home to the Kea parrot species, and those who have encountered them probably already know that they are mischievous by nature. One of these birds proved that by snagging the Verhuel family’s GoPro camera when they weren’t paying attention, as they were taking a break from a hiking trip along the Keplar Track. The device was placed on a fence to capture video of the wildlife, that is until…it went on a short journey.

These birds typically fly in a straight line, and the family knew that. So, they just followed the sound and ended up near a forested slope, when all of the birds just scattered, leaving just the GoPro camera behind on a rocky outcrop. Unfortunately, the parrot managed to slightly damage the camera by pulling off small bits of plastic off its casing.

We just followed the sound, went down there, could see them hanging out in the tree. They’d obviously heard us coming and abandoned the GoPro — and my son, he decided to go check the rocks… and there it was, just sitting there, still filming. I downloaded (the footage) onto my phone… It was amazing. It was totally unexpected,” said the family.
