This may not be as exciting as finding the $2-million MTG ‘The One Ring’ card, but this Unreal Engine 5 tech demo does give us hope that a future Lord of the Rings game can actually look the part. It took Micah just 6 days from start to finish to complete the Fellowship of the Ring river scene using the ‘first person player’ template in Unreal Engine 5.



What you’re looking at is hardware ray tracing, powered by UE5’s Lumen and Nanite technologies. Lumen basically utilizes a hybrid version of ray-tracing, including screen-tracing (SSRT), signed distance fields (SDFs), and mesh distance fields (MDFs), to simulates light bouncing around a scene in real time.
